Emily Haines was born in India and raised in Canada, and her eclectic background has influenced the singer's many musical projects. Haines is mostly known for fronting the Canadian indie-rock band Metric, and she's also had a major stake in such groups as Broken Social Scene and Stars.
2006 saw Haines stretching her musical boundaries with the piano-driven solo album, Knives Don't Have Your Back. The record leaves behind the frenzied sounds of Metric for something melancholic and slightly dark, and was released in the Fall by Last Gang Records, the same label that backed Metric's Live It Out in 2005. "I really want it to function as music that works in a room with your friends in it," she told Under the Radar in August 2006. "I don't want it to be isolated loner music."
