It's a good thing this project is called Julian Casablancas + The Voidz
, because it would be nearly impossible to detect theStrokes
frontman at all if his name wasn't attached to the band. Casablancas and co. have released a new video for "Where No Eagles Fly," a track off their forthcoming debut album Tyranny
on Casablanca's label, Cult Records. With the apparent budget and special effects of a late-80s horror flick, it's clear Casablancas is putting as much distance between The Voidz and The Strokes as he possibly can.
That's not to say it's totally bad. Although the project has caught a lot of criticism, there is still something to be said for any song with lyrics as strong as Casablancas's, even if the delivery leaves a lot to be desired from the 21st century rock icon. (He sings the line "We plot in our sleep but follow orders all day" while play-acting sleep and getting the timing completely wrong.) Regardless, Casablancas has put in his time, and if this is the creative direction he wants to explore, he probably has a damn good reason for it. Hopefully, we'll see that with release of the full record on September 23.
