Part of the value of today's global musical landscape is connectivity. It's easier than ever to discover the hidden gems of every city on the planet, from small town America to the other side of the world, right down to every single smallest niche genre. That's why I never mind trekking to places I've never been before in New York City, because at some point or another, these diamonds from overseas traipse their way through our backyard. It's the nature of our city, kind of like a divining rod of musical consumption, a stepping stone for the unknown act to become something greater.

Last week, a friend sent me a few rough SoundClouds and a YouTube video (read: the 21st century cassette tape) of a French folk act called The Dove and The Wolf. The band played their first few shows in NYC this week, after catching the attention of singer/songwriter Rachael Yamagata. Let's hear about them from her first. Via Yamagata's blog:

The Dove and the Wolf the beautiful frenchies as I keep calling them. Amazing that you can meet two gals in Paris and have them join you for vox in NY three months later. Did you figure out which was which? Louise is the Wolf and Paloma the Dove. Such gorgeous harmonies, dare I say angelic, for 'Keep Going'. And then the madness ensued as Starfish joined on upright, Rich Mercurio on drums, Alagia on piano and all of the rest of us together to finish off the night in pure full band delight.

The Dove and The Wolf occupy the space in between First Aid Kit's rambunctiously gentle harmonies and the pastoral comfort of bands like Fleet Foxes. You'd think it sounds better on paper than in person, but you'd be wrong. Last night, despite the intrusive rumbling of the J train, and some neighboring noise from some sort of Bed-Stuy version of a Fashion's Night Out event, the intertwined voices of Paloma Gil and Louise Hayat-Camard held the crowd at Goodbye Blue Monday completely transfixed.

The band has a new EP, which will be on sale this Sunday at their final New York appearance. I'd recommend catching them now, before a very large publication thrusts them into the spotlight.
