We kicked off the week with
Childish Gambino, a label created by a Wu-Tang name generator for Donald Glover, the all-around actor/comedian working on his rap career. But while the story is familiar, the components reverberate quite differently than anything we've heard before. Gambino spits equal parts venom and wit, his composer/co-producer Ludwig Göransson at his side, with the intensity of most solidified rap vets. It's more original than imitative, and more aggressive than an ancillary creative outlet. Childish Gambino is a refraction of the tired tropes of today's rap, infusing the whole idea of rapping as a genuine outlet. Like Donald, his verse is fun, fluid, and most of all, frankly authentic.
