Vacationer is a certain kind of special. Their music is chill, fun, and unoffensive Their sound is capable of turning a frown upside down and the band's positive attitude has done nothing but garner more fans.

Vacationer is currently gearing up to play NYC's Downtown Music Festival this weekend and Babeble had the opportunity to ask Vacationer's mastermind, Kenny Vasoli, a few questions about the fest, the band's back catalog, use of emojis and code words the band uses amongst themselves.

You've successfully created a "Nu-Hula" sound, which is not only insanely great, but fits in well with the current trend of happier music. When the tides change will you adjust to conform to what's popular or do you plan on sticking with your current fine tuned sound?

I'm glad to hear that positivity is something trending among artists right now. It was an epiphany for me to make our subject matter exclusively optimistic. I had worked out my demons and vented plenty with my past projects. The songs act as reminders for me to focus on enjoying life and identifying pure beauty. I don't have any intention of changing that within Vacationer. Everyone struggles with life, including myself. I choose to focus on positivity for the benefit of myself and those around me. I believe this life truly is what you make of it, and I choose to vacation as much as humanly possible.

How does it feel to have fans sing your songs back to you? Is there one you particularly like fans to sing along to?

"Everyone Knows" seems to be very singable among the crowd. I love it. I'll always love that. It's like receiving an audible "mmm" after cooking for someone. It's gratifying to witness people connecting with what we've created.

What's the best hashtag someone has used in reference to your band or music?

I like it when people run with the chill-puns, as I like to call them. I see #chilldozer, #chillhammer, #chillcoaster, etc... They all make me smile.

What's your favorite thing about playing music events like The Downtown Festival?

Festivals can be really fun because they hit a wide scope of people. We get the chance to play for those that are familiar and new to us, its the best of both worlds. Downtown have championed us since our first year of being a band. I have deep gratitude for the people over there and I'm very proud that we are able to represent them at the festival.

What's the best new band you've recently discovered that you'd like to tour and/or collaborate with?

Our drummer, Ryan, turned me on to TEEN. I hope we can share a bill with them in the future, I dig the tunes. I'm also getting hip to CID RIM's music. CID, if you ever need a dude for a top-line get at me!

Do you have any specific emoji or emoji pairing you use in texts or emails to describe your band or a certain song?

The snowflake (chill) and the wave. I also like the spiral and the hands in the air thing.

When touring, do you ever pick up weird trinkets at gas stains or small towns? What's the strangest thing you've taken from the road?

There is a Texaco station on the border of AZ that has so much cool stuff. They have crazy/cool Mexican art. I got a couple necklaces from there made from dried beans and a little guy made of acorns on the end of it. Love it.

How many un-released Vacationer songs do you have banked that didn't make either album? Will you ever share them with fans?

We have one or two completed songs that are unreleased at this point. They could make it on to the side B of a 7" or one of our mixtapes. They most likely won't carry over to a future record, but you never know.

Does Vacationer use any words that are code for something else?

If we are stepping out for a smoke we'll often say we are have a band meeting, or even "having a laugh." I heard that was The Beatles' code.

Who is your favorite fan?

There is a couple in Philly who come to nearly every show we play and even DJ sets. They always dance and seem super in love, very sweet people. I've also jumped to the conclusion that Jay-Z is a fan since he had us on at Made In America fest. I'm going to continue believing that until he personally tells me otherwise.
