tUnE-yArDs recently blew me away in concert with an amazing cover of Sonic Youth's "The Burning Spear," in which she did a live vocal interpretation of each guitar sound using a loop pedal, complete with guttural drums and ripping vocal calls and chants. I'm eager to hear anything she produces. The fairly disturbing new music video for her unique single, "Gangsta" has just been released. This quirky black-and-white video is full of gritty urban scenes of freaky contortionism, ghost-story flashlight faces and one bug-eating man. As Merrill Garbus dances around in a frilly number, her snarky lyrics ask, "Whats a boy to do if he'll never be a gangsta?" The chorus resolves, "Bang-bang, oi!/Never move to my hood/cause danger is crawlin out the wood." The song features a siren-like vocal loop with vocal interjections that sound like the rhythmic beeps of a pulse monitor, ominously echoing the warning within the chorus with not-so-subtle flair.
