This week's mixtape is curated by members of the sprightly Kopecky Family Band. We love these guys, and their new album Kids Raising Kids is a catchy, terrific bit of modern pop n' roll. So naturally, we had high hopes for their playlist to be indicative of that style, and were not disappointed with the eclectic and classic result. Well done, family!

New! Listen to (most of) the mixtape on Spotify!

    1. "Everybody's Talkin" - Bill Withers - Just As I Am

This is off of my favorite LP that I own. This entire album is pure gold. You can tell that Bill put his heart and soul into this album.

    2. "I'm Waiting For The Man" - The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico

    This song needs no explanation.

    3. "Sloop John B" - The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

We like to play this song in the van when we start to feel like we're going crazy after a long day on the road, it quickly turns into a singalong and has an odd way of returning us to a sane state of mind.

    4. "Way Out" - The La's - The La's

Our friends in Gomez introduced us to the La's on a tour last summer. It took about 3 months for me to be able to go one day without listening to them.

    5. "Roadrunner" - The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers

This reminds me of the good old days when we would go on mini tours every weekend while we were all still in school. It's exceptional road trip music.

    6. "Raised Right Men" - Tom Waits - Bad As Me

This story by Tom Waits sums up why I love everything that he does so much:

"In the forest, there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. Every day, the straight tree would say to the crooked tree, 'Look at me...I'm tall, and I'm straight, and I'm handsome. Look at you...you're all crooked and bent over. No one wants to look at you.' And they grew up in that forest together. And then one day the loggers came, and they saw the crooked tree and the straight tree, and they said, 'Just cut the straight trees and leave the rest.' So the loggers turned all the straight trees into lumber and toothpicks and paper. And the crooked tree is still there, growing stronger and stranger every day."

    7. "Desire Lines" - Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest

We got to catch Deerhunter last year at Bonnaroo. I vividly remember the last two and a half minutes of this song paralyzing like us deer in the headlights (no pun intended...maybe).

    8. "With Strangers" - Little Joy - Little Joy

This is one of my favorite summer albums. Every time I hear this particular song I get flooded with memories of watching old black and white romance films on AMC with my mom.

    9. "Through The Morning, Through The Night" - Robert Plant and Alison Krauss - Raising Sand

This album is a masterpiece. There's something strangely poetic about Alison Krauss singing a song from a man's perspective about how broken hearted he is to find out that another man has been with the love of his life.

    10. "How Will You Meet Your End" - A.A. Bondy - American Hearts

This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. I love the story that A.A. Bondy tells in it.

    11. "The Way The Whole Thing Ends" - Gillian Welch - The Harrow and The Harvest

"That's the way the cornbread crumbles" has got to be one of the most brilliant lyrics to ever be in a folk song.

Listen to "Heartbeat," off the band's new album.

And check out their Baeble session from CMJ of last year.
