Battles Bring A Little Frantic Art Prog Back To Our Lives

Few things make my eyes light up like it's Christmas day and I'm seeing a pile of presents under the tree with my name on them quite like the words "new Battles music." Gloss Drop was one of the best records of 2011 (and I'm the weirdo who will claim that it's better than Mirrored), and when I got to see them in 2012 at Bonnaroo, they put on easily one of my favorite sets of the festival with their absurd technical proficiency and manic energy. But, Battles is back with a new record -- entirely instrumental this time -- called La Di Da Di due out 9/18. And they've released the record's second single, "FF Bada." I don't have the slightest clue what the title means, but I do know that Battles hasn't lost an ounce of their ability to craft tight but complex melodies that still retain enough hooks to worm their way into your brain. 9/18 can't get here soon enough.
