Has anyone ever been to a bad Ty Segall
show? At this point in the 20-something's career, it seems like everyone expects the best of him without being disappointed. The sweaty mess that was Webster Hall last night showed no signs of burning out, they could have danced all night if Ty Segall and company obliged.
Although Ty's performance was as explosive as his latest album, Manipulator
, the truth is opening band La Luz
stole the show. Relatively unknown in the East Coast, La Luz hails from Seattle and their first full-length album, It's Alive
, is the perfect surf-psych groove, blending spooky organs with sweet vocal melodies. La Luz swiftly played through a setlist full of album favorites like "Big Big Blood" and "Sure As Spring," holding the attention of every single audience member, save for the front row which was too busy bobbing their heads to look up. Sure, everyone felt satisfied after seeing Ty Segall, as expected, but La Luz were the surprise element of the night.
