You wouldn't expect a group billed as an "adventure girlpop duo" to be so obsessed with something creepy like Halloween, but Headless Horseman certainly seems appropriate for the spacey astro-tunes of Conner O'Neill and Fareed Sajan. Oh, and they were also both born on the holiday, so that helps. Some might say, "what's in a name?", but these guys put a ton of thought behind their moniker, and rightfully so... the music is as dense and lush as their explanation of the origin of "Headless Horseman". Meta!
Their bio is very specific about the quality of their gear; a copy of Magix Deluxe Edition 2004 from the now defunct CompUSA (free after rebate), "broken laptops, a half sawed bass, shotty USB ports and stereo from the 90's to mix", it all sounds like a SNL sketch. But the story has a certain undeniable charm, and the music backs up their dedication to their influences... Aphex Twin, Sigur Ros, Xiu Xiu. A pretty odd collection of stuff until you've heard it all tossed in a blender and served on ice. Definitely our flavor.
Their debut show is coming up on September 24th, at Glasslands, and it's a doozy. The bill includes Avey Tare (of Animal Collective) DJ, Crocodiles and Kria Brekkan (formerly of Mum). RSVP here (it's a Popgun show). They've also confirmed a month long residency at Pianos in November on Thursdays, which is NYC speak for "gaining traction".
Check out "Wavlngth" below. As for more recorded material, I don't think I can put it any better than they did. "HDLSS-and-DUM LP coming soon, Late Night Allentown Radio Mixtape coming sooner, HDLSS EP coming soonest". Aversion to vowels already here.
