is on to something. On her newest album Black Terry Cat
(Anti-), the Brooklyn-based, multi-faceted performance artist draws from a treasure trove of influences - r&b, hip hop, soul, punk rock, funk, Caribbean music - and creates exciting and enticing sonic morsels that are (probably) unlike anything else you've ever gobbled up.
So yeah, when the funky, fresh, and super cool musician signed up to bring her slick, super-ecclectic happenings down to Beautiful Sunset Park Brooklyn for our second edition of Bands + Brews, we knew it would be something special. So we pounced. Mother Nature, on the other hand, did it's best ot make sure the show never happened. On our walk into the office that morning, you could cut the air with a knife. Things felt combustible in the meteorology department and our collective anxiety was not helped by the warning of severe storms with 60+mph winds from our friends here at Industry City. Yet for most of the day we were hopeful. The stage was set. The lights went up. The bands arrived. It was downright beautiful...until it wasn't.
Around 4PM one wicked front rolled through NYC, bringing with it a wall of wind and biblical rainfall. The crew scrambled, tarping up equipment and batting down the hatch. We lost a tent, a guitar stand, and nearly a bass cab and head to a ferocious wind that seriously came out of nowhere. Some of us spent the lightning fast storm cowering under a tent on the stage hoping the amps that were currently sitting in a puddle of water were unplugged. It was wet and wild. It was actually kind of fun! And then the storm passed, clearing the way for one of those types of absolutely perfect summer nights the mind tends to return to when the city is in winter's grasp.
If you were there, you know what we're talking about. If you weren't, you missed one hell of a show! Xenia brought songs from Black Terry Cat
and man oh man, did she ever get down and get funky for a crowd that took a leap of faith and descended upon Industry City on a night it would have been very easy to say, "F*ck It...I'll go to the next one". R+B, Hip Hop, Soul, Punk Rock, Funk...it all lives in Xenia's revolutionary sound, and as she bound into the crowd to whip 'em up in a frenzy, well...we just hope the crack of our jaws hitting the floor didn't pick up in any of our audio engineer's mics. Cause man...it was AWESOME.
