With Kendrick Lamar officially positioned as the most important voice in contemporary hip-hop, it's easy to forget that he got his start as part of the Black Hippy crew. K-Dot, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy Q were part of the first wave of artists reclaiming West Coast hip-hop after a decade of East Coast/Midwest dominance. And although we've got King Kendrick these days, it's nice to return to those moments when he'd show up and run wild on guest verses on a Jay Rock track
or an Ab-Soul burner
. Well, we were gifted a rap blessing today with the release of Jay Rock's "Vice City" which features a reunion of the full Black Hippy crew. Maybe if we're good girls and boys, we can get a full Black Hippy collab record in the future?
