G** D***! I'm hard pressed to name a rapper not named Kanye West to experience the sort of meteoric critical and commercial success that Kendrick Lamar has had in the last three years. From playing a Thursday tent set at Bonnaroo in 2012 to headlining the festival this year is a huge move up the ranks (comparatively, Mumford & Sons did a similar trajectory but it took them a couple more years to reach the headline spot). And Kendrick is continuing to own late night as he supports this year's best album, To Pimp a Butterfly. K.Dot is already good friends with Stephen Colbert and he got the honor of being the show's first proper musical guest. That's a big deal folks. And Kendrick didn't disappoint with his medley of TPAB tracks, including a performance of "King Kunta" that damn near scorched the Earth. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Sorry, Kanye. Kendrick is king now.
