On his jubilant shuffle of a single "Comeback Kid (That's My Dog)", from his 2011 release Loverboy, Brett Dennen professed his love for a good comeback story. Come October 22nd, the Northern Californian will stage his own with the release of Smoke and Mirrors. It's an album that's decidedly folkier than the upbeat cuts that skipped through Loverboy; an approach we recently learned was influenced by Dennen's high mountain home. Recently Brett swung by our little backyard oasis, bringing three tracks from the album with him for a session that'll be released later this fall. For now, Dennen's only offering is a sliver in the form of the lead single, "Wild Child". It's a song that Brett admits takes on a personal mantra for him. The music biz can get pretty crazy, after all. I suppose when so many people depend on your music for their own well-being it can be tough to remember your own. Played every night scribbles like, "I am a wild child, yes I am / I wanna run free and I don't want to live up to anyone's plan," can serve as a much needed reminder of purpose. The song packs a slow, West Coast groove to it, reminiscing of folks like Tom Petty and Neil Young as it rolls along. Have at the song below and keep an eye on the site for our session with Brett sometime around the release of the album.

Smoke and Mirrors will be released on October 22nd.
