, pronounced "dough" as in Do-Re-Mi, is a French-Finnish pop group making waves overseas. Their first album, A Mouthful
, was released in 2008 and shot to #1 in France which is rare for a French band singing in English (in fact, they were the first of such to chart in the top spot). After listening to them, it's not entirely surprising.
The band, who have garnered acclaim from The New Yorker
among other publications, is reminiscent of recent experimental poppers Micachu & The Shapes
in their willingness to throw a diverse array of sounds together in service of a pop song. This musical adventurousness keeps The Dø interesting over the course of their full-length -- even if one song isn't your thing, you're sure to find something you like in the next. And singer Olivia Bouyssou Merilahti, whose vocals have been compared to Eminem and The XX
's Romy Croft, really brings the whole thing together with her charisma and presence.
They have a lot going on and, with their musical chops and undeniable talent, The Dø seem like they have a lot more interesting places to go. A Mouthful
is out now and the band is gearing up for a brief North American tour in September. Check out single "At Last" and tour dates below. - ben krusling
