Small Black's new single "Boys Life" could definitely be described as, for want of a better word, chill, but that wouldn't quite be doing it justice. Sure, it's a delicate song, a touch echoey, mixing misty synths and piano chords into a bittersweet, nostalgic melody, which is aided by the equally melancholic lyrics. "Pictures of youth, picturing you," frontman Josh Kolenik half-sings, half-whispers in the chorus. But despite its somber attitude, this song uses fizzing beats to prove the energy and danceability that nostalgia can muster up.
We recently shot Small Black at a Cutty Sark Showcase at Brooklyn Bowl, so be on the lookout for that on our website in the next several weeks!
