L.A.-based rockers After Midnight Project
have been around for over half a decade and with the release of Let's Build Something to Break
, the band is primed to tackle this year's Warped Tour. Guitarist Christian Meadows was kind enough to answer some of my questions via email.
Introduce yourself and tell us a little about your musical background.
My name is Christian Meadows and I play guitar in the band. I have been playing guitar and writing songs since I was 10 years old. The rest of the band is Jason Evigan (vocals), TJ Armstrong (bass), Danny Morris (drums), and Spencer Bastian (guitar).
Describe your sound.
Our sound is rock. We all we influenced by many different genres from Grunge to Metal and all are represented in our songs.
How did the band get started?
Jason (Lead Singer) started the band 5 years ago in his backhouse recording studio. Shortly after that the pieces of the puzzle began to some together. Danny (drums) was the first to join after an ad placed on Craigslist. TJ and Spencer come shortly afterward, and then I came in through an audition process.
Where did the band name come from?
The name After Midnight Project has a very literal meaning. Jason after working a day job and rehearsing with his other band at that time would come home late at night and write and record songs. Since it was the middle of the night, Jason titled the hard drive in which he saved these songs The After Midnight Project shortly after the The was dropped because AMP was way cooler than TAMP.
Where do you get your inspiration from and who are your biggest influences?
I personally get my inspiration from numerous things. One being my surroundings I am heavily influenced by where I am at that moment and the emotions in which I feel while being there. I think we can all say that we are inspired heavily by other music and other bands we hear everyday bands that push us to be a better band both in songwriting and live performance. The bands influences are Nine Inch Nails, Deftones, Muse, Incubus, Nirvana, My Chemical Romance etc.
How have you grown as a band and as individuals since being together?
As a band we grow and progress everyday both in songwriting and as people. Our songs are getting better as we write more; our live show is keeps getting more energetic and precise the more we play with each other. As people, we are all just growing up with each other and influence each others life away from music as well.
What was your writing process with this album? How do you think this process shows through the music?
The writing of this record dates back to those very first writing sessions with Jason alone in his studio 5 years back. From then until when we started picking songs for the record there were about 100 songs to choose from that had been written over the course of years - so we were in a good position to just pick the best songs for the album we wanted to make.
What's your favorite show you've played and why?
We have played so many amazing shows from arenas to small clubs, from South Beach Florida to Seattle so many great shows and great memories.
If you could tour with any band past or present who would it be and why?
I know we all would love to tour with MUSE and now SOUNDGARDEN since they are reuniting...that would be great.
Tell us something interesting about each band member.
Jason also is a producer of music and produced our first EP, The Becoming
, Spencer has a degree from the University of Michigan in engineering, TJ is Canadian, Danny loooooooves cupcakes, and I went to USC film school and love to make movies outside of music.
