Let's Preview the 2012 MTV VMAs

It's less than a week away -- the biggest, most important music award show of the year. It makes the Grammys look like the SAG Awards. You know what I'm talking about -- the MTV Video Music Awards (or as you know them, the VMAs). The night where all of music comes together -- the Biebers, the Perrys, the Skrillexes (Skrilli?). To prepare you for the festivities, a full six days ahead of schedule, we've broken down each category -- who ought to win, and who will more than likely take the moon men. You're welcome.

Best New Artist

Who Should Win: Frank Ocean - "Swim Good"
Who Will Win: Carly Rae Jepsen - "Call Me Maybe"

Frank Ocean is having a monster year -- both in the indie and mainstream worlds. The video for "Swim Good" is just a small sample of the unique, inventive style he showed to the masses this year with channel ORANGE. But let's be honest, this is MTV, their fans are voting. CRJ is not losing this. The Krudge's song has literally been avoidable since May, and the kids really, really, REALLY like it.

Best Pop Video

Who Should Win: Rihanna - "We Found Love"
Who Will Win" Justin Bieber - "Boyfriend"

Last year, Justin Bieber's song "U Smile" beat Kanye West's "All of the Lights" for Chrissakes. Rihanna's club-ready "We Found Love" is great, and certainly the best in the category, but it's hardly as formidable as Kanye was last year. The Biebs can't be stopped. Also, keep an eye on One Direction for the quasi-upset.

Best Rock Video

Who Should Win: Black Keys - "Lonely Boy"
Who Will Win: Black Keys - "Lonely Boy"

Let's state the obvious first -- nothing else in this category comes close to the one-shot, work-dancing video the Black Keys put out for "Lonely Boy" -- it's incredible. And looking at the rest of the nominees -- Coldplay, Imagine Dragons (who?), Jack White, and Linkin Park -- only Coldplay is more marketable than the Black Keys. Jack White's "Sixteen Saltines" is one of the best videos of 2012, but what teenager is going to relate to that dude?

Best Hip-Hop Video

Who Should Win: Kanye West feat. Big Sean, Pusha T, & 2 Chainz - "Mercy"
Who Will Win: Drake - "HYFR"

Kanye's likability at the VMAs is well-documented. But his video with the rest of the G.O.O.D. Music team is fantastic, and the song is even better. Unfortunately, Drake's the mainstream darling here, and "HYFR" ain't too shabby, either. We'll actually be okay if he beats out Yeezy. If Nicki Minaj wins, on the other hand...

Best Electronic Dance Music Video

Who Should Win: Avicii - "Levels"
Who Will Win: Avicii - "Levels"

Another office-related dancing music video that should and will take the cake. Calvin Harris' "Feels So Close" may be a better song, but the video's lacking and "Levels" is the reason Avicii blew up so big in the past year. Skrillex is every young person's favorite DJ, but we just can't see him winning this year.

Best Female Video

Who Should Win: Rihanna - "We Found Love"
Who Will Win: Beyonce - "Love on Top"

It's gonna be Beyonce for two reasons: one, because she got robbed that one year, when a certain someone thought she had the best video "of all time." And two, because she earned serious points for revealing her baby bump at the 2011 VMAs. Sorry Ri Ri, you can't beat that karma.

Best Male Video

Who Should Win: Usher - "Climax"
Who Will Win: Drake feat. Rihanna - "Take Care"

Usher came back in a big way with the Diplo-produced track, "Climax," but I just don't think he's going to be able to overcome the star-power of "Take Care." We indie-heads would just like to point out that "Take Care" samples a Jamie xx, Gil Scott Heron song. Also, Bieber-watch is on -- he and his insanely active fans may destroy all expectations in this category.

Video of the Year

Who Should Win: M.I.A. - "Bad Girls"
Who Will Win: Drake feat. Rihanna - "Take Care"

We're surprised that M.I.A. even snuck into this category. Her video is that good, though, even though she doesn't actually have a real chance of winning. For all the reasons mentioned above, Drake and Rihanna are gonna win video of the year. Gotye's "Somebody I Used To Know" is an intriguing underdog, but we can't actually picture him going all the way.

Guess we'll just have to tune in next Thursday night and see what happens.
