just released a video for the song "Exhumed," which was released back in June and is the first single from her upcoming album Okovi
. The album, which is being released September 8, will be her sixth studio album. Zola Jesus has said of Okovi
, "This album is a deeply personal snapshot of loss, reconciliation, and a sympathy for the chains that keep us all grounded to the unforgiving laws of nature."
"Exhumed" begins with a loop of intense strings, which are joined by an echoing, haunting background vocal and menacing bass and drums. Zola's voice, which borders on an operatic sound, stands out brightly against the dark and heavy background. The overall sound is both sparse and minimal at times, and thick with emotion. As is her typical style, Zola Jesus mixes elements of electronic, industrial, and classical music to create a unique sound.
Like the song itself, the video for "Exhumed" is dark and at times erratic. Corrupted, black and white footage of a figure lying in a grave and being buried, only to awaken, crawl out, and run away, adds to the unsettling darkness of the song. In both imagery and sound, the video for "Exhumed" is powerfully emotional.
