I remember the first time I ever heard Jillette Johnson. It was 2013. And I was putting together my list of the bands playing Bonnaroo that year that you probably didn't know, but that you should learn about right now. And one of my favorite discoveries as I was prepping for that series of pieces was Jillette Johnson. The first time I heard her Water in a Whale record I was blown away. I remember the exact phrase I used to describe her: "what if you combined the lyrical maturity and complexity of Fiona Apple with the powerhouse vocals of Adele." And it's still true. And I was trying to figure out what artist to use for this week's Throwback Thursdays, I remember randomly discussing how talented Jillette Johnson was with an industry peer at an event last week. And then I couldn't think of anyone better to use for this feature.
