Back in 2009, acclaimed indie singer/songwriter and Belle and Sebastian
frontman, Stuart Murdoch
, released an album entitled God Help The Girl
, consisting of a makeshift women's choir he enlisted from an advertisement in a Glasgow magazine. The album was intended to be utilized as an accompaniment to a film written and directed by Murdoch bearing the same title, starring Emily Browning, Olly Alexander, Hannah Murray, and Pierre Boulanger.
Now that a considerable amount of time has passed, following a string of film festival screenings and a Kickstarter campaign, not only do the film and album have official release dates, but thanks to Entertainment Weekly
, fans have the opportunity to stream the album in full today.
The songs are delicate and fragile — reminiscent in musical perspective of Murdoch's adoration for the beloved city of Glasgow. Each melody has me figuratively trudging through cobblestone alley ways and surveying Scotland's silent pathways in my head — an image that's nearly impossible to maintain, and yet somehow, Murdoch does it flawlessly.
God Help The Girl
sees its official release in select theaters on September 5th.
