OK, so last week we had quite a mixtape. Chock full of new tunes. Totally sweet. And this week might be even better, if you keep an open mind. Stay with me. We're exploring new sounds here. Garage rock, lush pop, 80s new wave-ish, pop bangers, and melancholic derivatives. We're going on an adventure. Put on your beat turbans, we're going to jam-ghanistan.

New! Listen to (most of) the mixtape on Spotify!

    1. "1957" - Milo Greene - Milo Greene

From the band's self-titled debut. Nothing says road trip like that opening drum pattern, mixed with ambigious emotional turmoil. Love the bridge refrain.

    2. "It All Began With A Burst" - Kishi Bashi - 151a

We've dubbed this "impossible smile music," because you always come out grinning and you don't always know why because it's so gleefully weird. Something about that bass riff makes me think Graceland and I'm not complaining one single bit, that's for sure.

    3. "Genesis" - Grimes - Visions

Claire Boucher still hasn't returned any of my calls, but that's OK. I just hope she's not seeing some douche from Pitchfork.

    4. "Lots" - Dan Deacon - America

Sleigh Bells wishes it could be this badass, and Deacon isn't even trying to be a badass, he's just trying to be poignant.

    5. "Yet Again" - Grizzly Bear - Shields

Grizzly Bear is the only band I know that can perpetually sound like an introspective moment on a stormy crag, surrounded by the crash of waves and mist, by Robert Frost.

    6. "I Love It" - Icona Pop - I Love It Single

    TRAMPOLINES!

    7. "Throw Out Your Wish List" - Chomp - Buddha Jabba Momma

Chomp is a Cloud Nothings side project, which is incredible, because they found a way to sound even more garage-y than the average Cloud Nothings tune. This is as rough around the edges as you can get. And yet, it retains all the melodic charm of its parent act.

    8. "Twenty Three" - California Wives - Art History

We actually prefer this song over the insanely catchy "Marianne," mostly due to comments made in our interview. We feel it.

    9. "Pick Up The Phone" - Carina Round - Tigermending

This is the best aural example of hypnosis in recent memory, probably because we can't remember anything before we heard it. Who are you?

    10. "Dark Star" - Polica - Give You The Ghost

Everybody funk now. Have a great weekend!
