Going to a MS MR and Marina and the Diamonds show was like going to a theatrical performance (not to mention there was an '80s themed prom party next door). Both were Saturday night events at NYC's Webster Hall, and it was difficult to tell who was going to which show. Everything was over-the-top, dramatic and had a lot of personality. MS MR could have been a second cousin to Lana Del Rey with their dreamy pop crooning and nostalgic sound. Although the band doesn't have too many songs available to the public right now, they delighted the audience with their hit single "Hurricane," along with a variety of unreleased tracks, and seemed to put everyone in a trance.



Marina showcased her flair for the dramatic with a series of costume changes and gestures. For the record, she started the performance in a veil and wedding-like attire. Although Marina sang many songs off of her sophomore record, Electra Heart, she graced the audience with a few beautiful performances from her first album as well. She stripped down "Obsessions" into a gorgeous, seductive melody and had the whole audience singing along for "I Am Not A Robot." Marina knows how to re-purpose her tracks and make them into something truly unique and beautiful. Marina did know how to get the crowd dancing, especially with "Bubblegum Bitch." It was a big challenge to stop dancing afterwards, and I was totally okay with that.
