Last night on may way home from work, I picked up one of my friends at the train station in Queens — like I do everyday. And just like every day, I spotted him on the corner of some abandoned street with one arm raised high, signaling me to move towards him — so I did. It was dark and the dusk had hardly settled on the narrow road that led me to him; his face was difficult to see amongst the scattered traffic lights and illuminated street signs. And as I moved closer, I saw a distraught look upon his face, like something awful had happened. And as he opened the car door and got in, he took a deep breath and let out a grieving sigh. We exchanged glances, shook hands and I asked what was wrong. He looked at me and said, "haven't you checked the news, or the thousands of Facebook statuses? Robin Williams was found dead from apparent suicide." — I froze.
For the rest of the car ride we sat half silent and half recalling our most memorable performances from the late great actor/comedian. "There was nothing he couldn't do" my friend exclaimed — "all he wanted to do was make people laugh."
So as we slowly hit more and more traffic, we started a roll call, naming every film that he had been in that changed our lives, counting on our fingers. And after using up both our hands, it got even more upsetting to accept the loss of such an influential being — a man who could make anybody laugh with a simple gesture.
But sunrise doesn't last all morning and all things must pass. So, for your enjoyment, and in honor of the actor/comedian/hero Robin Williams, were counting down the top 7 roles in which he lent his extraordinary skills to music — for without Robin's all-encompassing light, the world would be a very dark place. Enjoy:
7. "Come Together" - Bobby Mcferrin and Robin Williams (1998)
6. "Why Is Everybody Picking On Me": Jack (1996)
5. "Aint Never Had A Friend Like Me" - Aladdin (1992)
4. "My Way" - Happy Feet (2006)
3. "I Yam What I Yam" - Popeye (1980)
2. Elmer Fudd Sings Bruce (1982)
1. "No Meat, Big Feet" - Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
Rest in peace Robin; you will forever be missed.
