Queens of the Stone Ages 'The Evil Has Landed' is Absolute Madness

Earlier this summer, it was announced that Queens of the Stone Age's new album, Villains, was produced by Mark Ronson. Not only that, but Josh Homme also revealed that his interest in dancing, as well as the Ronson-produced track "Uptown Funk," were some of the inspirations behind the album's sound.

Literally every part of that description might have left QOTSA fans scratching their heads, but if their new song, "The Evil Has Landed," is any indication, Villains will be surprisingly danceable without veering off in a totally un-QOTSA direction. "The Evil Has Landed" has all of that same hard-rocking, charming personality that QOTSA is known for, but it's also a wild, head-bopping ride, like driving through the desert at 90 mph with the top down and a favorite rock song blasting from the speakers.

The track begins in the most Queens of the Stone Agey way possible: with nothing but Josh Homme whispering "come close," before the song erupts into life with pitch-shifted guitar riffs, thunderous drumming, and Mikey Shoes's wild bass-playing. Like the best QOTSA tracks, it's absolute madness, a kind of controlled chaos. Much like the band's first single off of Villains, "The Way You Used to Do," the real star of the show here is the guitar-playing. The takeaway from these two tracks should be that Villains is shaping up to have some of the most memorable guitar parts in the band's entire discography. Homme has openly referred to Jimmy Page as one of his greatest guitar heroes, but that influence comes through on "The Evil Has Landed" more than ever. It's even a bit reminiscent of Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean," which is no small compliment.
