An apparently un-Auto-Tuned recording of pop star Britney Spears has made its way to the internet, and is spreading like wildfire. The verdict is mostly "yikes."
It's not the worst thing that Britney has ever done to us — this
probably is — and her lengthy career has endured much worse, but it still isn't great to hear. The song is a skeletal version of the lead track "Alien" from 2013's Britney Jean
, and it features the singer's vocals sounding distressingly flat.
After the recording started to gain attention, the song's producer William Orbit stepped forward and confirmed via Facebook
that it's indeed Britney's unedited voice that we're hearing. He stressed, however, that the track was simply a warm-up, not intended for anyone's ears: "A generous singer will put something down the mic to help the engineer get their systems warmed up and at the right level, maybe whilst having a cup of herb tea and checking through lyrics before the session really kicks off. Its not expected to be a 'take.'"
You probably shouldn't, but you can listen to the recording in full below.
Fortunately, the audio has been removed.
