Today's geek-out comes compliments of David O. Russell. You know him as the dude that made the perfect chick flick, Silver Linings Playbook. At its shallowest depths, a film about a fledgling couple training for a dance competition, but it was welcomed by boyfriend audiences everywhere due to its inclusion of drugs, gambling, football, and schizophrenia. Oh ... and Jennifer Lawrence in yoga pants. Apparently, Russell wanted to remain atop award nominating minds when assembling the cast of his upcoming feature, American Hustle, which once again stars Bradley Cooper Robert De Niro, Michael Pena, and J-Law, who won the Best Actress Oscar for her previous role. Russell grabbed two additional stars from his previous Best Picture nom, The Fighter, casting Christian Bale (another Russell Oscar winner) and Amy Adams.
The story of the new flick revolves around a relatively true story about two con artists (Bale and Adams) who work with a federal agent (Bradley Cooper) to bring down their peers and politicians, the primary target being Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), the overtly corrupt mayor of an impoverished 1970s Camden, NJ (a place that since hasn't changed much).
The trailer strangely premiered earlier today for a mass of stay-at-home moms on Good Morning America, but luckily there's now a YouTube capture. Anything with David O. Russell's name attached as well as such a premiere cast would catch our attention, but this really sealed the deal by including Led Zeppelin's "Good Times Bad Times", as well as Lawrence and Adams dressed as sexed-up 70s Jersey kittens. He's not included in the trailer, but Louis C.K. is also listed to star in the film. So yeah, this is going to kick some ass, and it will surely be The Wolf Of Wall Street's prime competitor come award season.
American Hustle is set to release December 13th.
