Lady Lamb the Beekeeper
, based in Portland, Maine, crafts folk tunes cobbled from a range of unpretentious elements, always assembled in just the right order. Some songs use only a strummed banjo, while others employ layers of guitars accompanied by shaking bells. Lady Lamb (aka Aly Spaltro) has a voice with enough texture to catch her rambling lyrics, whose poeticism generally avoids cliche admirably, if they ever lean toward cheesy.
"Almond Colored Sheets" is one of her simplest, cleanest tracks, and none the weaker for it. The words read like an early-morning stream of consciousness, and the echo-y sound of the vocals highlights the dream-world inspiration she claims, while setting Lady Lamb the Beekeeper apart from similar folk.
