"I hope that we've graduated beyond the indie upstart tag that we've been getting the last five years. Hopefully this one will affirm that we're here". When it comes to the places they'd like their new album Champ
to take them, it's a goal that's beyond reasonable for Greg Alsop
and the rest of his Tokyo Police Club
band mates. Since storming on to the scene in '06, TPC have honed in on the kind of proper, pop chops that have given them the inside track on this here music industry of ours. Theirs' are tunes that come packaged with a host of tasty touches hiding inside: acrobatic swirls of guitar, warm and woozy swells of synthesizer, and of course, Dave Monks' endearing, boy next door vocal delivery at the helm of the quartet.
Given the 500 person guest list (in a room with a 250 max capacity, no less) the band turned in for this secret, record release extravaganza, it's obvious the band is only gaining momentum. Crammed in to a hot and sweaty mess of a room in the basement of NYC's Webster Hall, our latest exclusive concert video release shows TPC whirling through songs new and old before a happy gathering of friends and fans. It's as endearing and youthful of a performance as we've seen from these baby faced Canucks (regardless of the beard guitarist Josh Hook hides behind)...one that lets you know Tokyo Police Club have arrived on the door step of bigger and better things. Would you expect anything less from the champs? - David Pitz
