At a time when every other activist is desperate to be loud and to be heard, Jamila Woods' 'VRY BLK' stands out of the crowd. Her songwriting is brutally honest, as she encourages us to talk about the real issues that invade our world today and reminds us that our actions speak louder than words. There is a delicacy within her words -- with a swift, sweet sounding song, she makes a powerful statement lyrically. And she's doing it better than a lot of other artists today. When it comes to injustice, Woods makes her voice loud for all to hear, and we respect the shit out of that.
'VRY BLK,' along with the rest of her album, HEAVN, sounds like a peaceful protest that calls for hugs and agreements between two completely opposite sides of a spectrum. One being that of a clear cut message about injustice, the other one of a poetic, pleasant sound that's just fun to move your shoulders to.
