SONG OF THE WEEK: 'Say Yeah' by Kishi Bashi

This week's song is "Say Yeah," brought to you by Kaoru Ishibashi's solo project, Kishi Bashi. The song is off of his forthcoming LP, Sonderlust, out September 16th.

Warning: This song is going to fuck with your brain. There is SO MUCH STUFF going on, and some of it shouldn't work together, but IT TOTALLY DOES. Let's start with that forty second long, Nintendo-inspired intro. Experimental synths bubble as different synths sweep in on top with beautiful strings, creating several layers and making it feel like you're about to enter the forbidden castle to save Princess Peach.

Then, after the lengthy intro, Bon Iver-esque vocals enter along with a tucked-away acoustic guitar slyly panned to both sides. After the vocals have their moment of stardom, a groovy bass pops in, completely throwing us off and adding a new, danceable layer. Then sampled vocals come in with a catchy melody.

This song touches on so many different genres. During the hook, it catches us off guard and suddenly turns into a 70s disco hit? But then it's also a little funky, a little jazzy, and a little folky? And then (correct me if I'm wrong) but what I think is a flute comes in to round up the outro?

We can't keep up -- and that's why this song is highlighted as our Song of the Week. There are a bunch of question marks. As much as we love a simple, mindless pop song, we also have a lot of appreciation for music that makes us think and keeps us on our feet. It's truly its own and impossible to label.

And if you're digging it as much as we are, make sure you check out our session with Kishi Bashi here:
