If you are/know a girl born between 1985 and 1992, chances are you've heard that the Spice Girls are planning to turn their not-yet-dusty repertoire into a bonafide musical! (to be spearheaded by Judy Craymer, who brought you Mamma Mia, naturally) With all due respect to Posh and co, their keen entrepreneurial knack has our brains whirling with bands who we think deserve a little Broadway Lovin' of their own. Cue the list:
1. of Montreal
Any set designer's DREAM. of Montreal has plenty of bizarre story lines to choose from, and enough dancey numbers for the whole family. This would be a trippy inter-galatic story about a colony of transvestites on the moon or a flying pig who dreams of being a man or pretty much anything involving a wizard. Watch this and imagine the possibilities:
2. The Ramones
These lighting quick punky tunes just beg to be choreographed. We propose: A privileged British girl runs away from home seeking excitement and fame. Instead, she finds a gang of teenage boys who are petty thieves and wanna-be rock stars. Will she learn to fit into their wild world? And more importantly, will she be able to avoid the nation-wide police search for her?
3. Bell & Sebastian
Our favorite melancholy sweethearts should have their indie-pop ouvre turned into a coming-of-age story about a girl in the Mid-West who accidentally kills her skeezy boss and has to run away, change her name and start a new life as a (Catastrophe) waitress, where she encounters love and a chance at happiness, if she can keep her secret.
4. The Eagles
A young man who dreams of being a star moves into Hotel California temporarily, only to find himself surrounded by vice and temptations in the dark underbelly party scene of the glamorous and famous. Can he escape, and does he even want to?
5. Beyonce/Destiny's Child
Modern day "My Fair Lady," 'nuff said.
Any Broadway execs out there reading this, feel free to give us a call to talk business.
