Who Got Snubbed In MTV's VMA Nominations

The MTV VMAs are upon us, and the nominees have been revealed. The usual suspects litter the list. There's a lot of Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Bruno Mars. But hey, what do you expect from MTV? Here's a list of who we think deserved recognition.

Video of the Year

Nominees
Justin Timberlake - "Mirrors"
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz - "Thrift Shop"
Bruno Mars - "Locked Out of Heaven"
Robin Thicke feat. T.I. and Pharrell - "Blurred Lines"
Taylor Swift - "I Knew You Were Trouble"

Our Pick:

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Despair"

This video features a sunrise over NYC from atop the Empire State Building. It's the first video that's ever been shot atop the building, and it comes with a fly-around helicopter outro that may draw a tear.

Best Rock Video

Nominees
Imagine Dragons - "Radiocative"
Fall Out Boy - "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)"
Mumford and Sons - "I Will Wait"
30 Seconds To Mars - "Up In The Air"
Vampire Weekend - "Diane Young"

Our Picks:

Foals - "Late Night"

This video is a bit raunchy and explicit, but juxtaposes love, sex, violence, pain, and despair in a stunningly intense way. Check out our exclusive session with Foals here.

Atoms For Peace - "Ingenue"

Yorke may not be on Spotify anymore, but you can still watch him dance like a maniac on YouTube.

Best Hip Hop Video

Nominees
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton - "Cant Hold Us"
Drake - "Started From The Bottom"
Kendrick Lamar - "Swimming Pools"
A$AP Rocky feat. Drake, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar - "F**kin Problems"
J. Cole feat. Miguel - "Power Trip"

Our Pick:

Ghostface Killa - "Rise of the Ghostface Killa"

Wu Tang's Ghostface Killa incorporates some badass knife play and cultic images into this violent track.

Best Female Video

Nominees
Rihanna feat. Mickey Ekko - "Stay"
Taylor Swift - "I Knew You Were Trouble"
Miley Cyrus - "We Cant Stop"
P!nk feat. Nate Ruess - "Just Give Me A Reason"
Demi Lovato - "Heart Attack"

Our Picks:

Austra - "Painful Like"

It would probably be a good thing if Austra got VMA level exposure - perhaps little girls would cease watching Miley twerk and give up Katie Stelmanis as their role model. Watch Austra's live concert at the Hype Hotel here.

Best Male Video

Nominees
Justin Timberlake - "Mirrors"
Robin Thicke feat. T.I. and Pharrell - "Blurred Lines"
Bruno Mars - "Locked Out of Heaven"
Ed Sheeran - "Lego House"
Kendrick Lamar - "Swimming Pools"

Our Picks:

Har Mar Superstar - "Lady, You Shot Me"

Har Mar shows a more mature side for his newest video, but still gives his very best showmanship.

Jim James - "A New Life"

Jim James is out of control. He's constantly on tour, and if you've ever seen him live you know he's a wild man on stage. This love song off his solo album has gotten some famous acclaim, like when Questlove Jenkins demanded him to play this at his wedding. This video is kinda nuts, but I gotta agree with The Roots' drummer when he says the song is epic. Watch Jim James get down at Hype Hotel here.
