Presumably,
Diplo of
Major Lazer was drawn to the subtle island feel of
Hot Chip's "Look At Where We Are" and decided to run with it. The Major Lazer remix hones into that Caribbean-ness by turning the chord progression into a reggae beat before everything goes haywire. Tons of credit goes to Diplo for turning a slow-burning jam into a semi-dubstep extravaganza.
As for the official music video, it's also a bit unexpected. Directed by Danny Perez, it's a quasi-Frankenstein narrative, but instead of injecting electricity into a body, the doctor is tossing in strawberries and stuffing from a carnival prize stuffed animal snake. There may also be a slight condemnation of the modeling industry? Would you be surprised if I told you that Perez has frequently worked with
Animal Collective?
