Guillermo del Toro's upcoming animated film The Book of Life
, based on Mexican folk art and the not-so-cheerful Day of the Dead folk legend, is already gaining mass acclaim for its ability to teeter on the edge of mature and childish humor and its use of adult themes. But what's getting fans most excited is its soundtrack, which is mainly composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, who's worked on other notable film score's such as Brokeback Mountain
(2005), 21 Grams
(2003), and Amores Perros
As heard in the preview for the film, a slow-paced Mariachi-flavored version of Radiohead
's "Creep" will be featured in several scenes of the film. However, what's not heard in the preview, and what's mostly getting are spines tingling, are the Mariachi renditions of Biz Markie
's beloved tune "Just A Friend" and Mumford and Sons'
"I Will Wait", as well as some original songs from composer/songwriter and Random Access Memories
collaborator, Paul Williams
. The film also features several noteworthy voices: Christina Applegate, Kate del Castillo, Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana.
While the rest of the soundtrack has yet to be announced, let's cross our fingers that the rest of it is as refreshingly innovative.
