You saw this past season of
Mad Men, right? There was that dude from Heinz badgering Don Draper to get
The Rolling Stones to put one of their songs in a commercial about
baked beans. Spoiler alert: it never happened. And for good reason.
This is how companies and ad agencies work -- they use popular and trendy music in their commercials so that audiences will immediately associate music they like to a product they have no idea about. The latest trend in advertising is using the electronic, percussive stylings of dubstep. But just like the Stones and baked beans, we're not totally sure that a five year-old girl getting down to
Mord Fustang is the best way to sell a bowl of
Weetabix.
Here are five other ill-advised dubstep/commercial combos:
1. The Watch Trailer
Because I'm totally sure Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn have
Skrillex on their iPods.
2. Internet Explorer 9
"Hey no, we're not lame! We're cooler than Apple and Google. They don't listen to dubstep! Love us! Please. PLEASE!?!"
3. Southern Comfort Fiery Pepper
You know what? This one might actually make sense, because I'm sure this is what your brain feels like after taking one shot of Southern Comfort Fiery Pepper. Then again, I'm not sure the phrase "Louisiana classics" should ever be said over
Crush Effect.
4. Red Tails Trailer
Fact: In World War II, the
Tuskegee Airmen prepared themselves for battle by listening to dubstep. (Fact: I made that up.)
5. Carl's Jr. Chicken Tender Sandwich
Okay first of all, this whole chicken tender-eating display is a little too graphic for me. Then the dubstep kicks in, and I start to feel sick all over again.
So, did we miss anything?
