Relying mainly on the most traditional form of grass-roots marketing (the word of mouth method), UK garage rock act
The Duke Spirit has a sound that channels old favorites like
My Bloody Valentine and
The Pixies. However they make the sound their own, with a smooth blend of grunge-infused riffs, and the almost classic sounding rock voice of front-lady
Liela Moss.
The band's sophomore studio effort,
Neptune is out now. It was recorded in Joshua Tree, CA (a UK band recording on the west coast?). They are flying below the radar, but a combination of buzz and opening for some high profile acts (
Queens of the Stone Age,
Mercury Rev, and
Yeah Yeah Yeahs to name a few) will certainly lead to a notable tour this summer. And lets not forget that they are supporting
Duran Duran on some European dates in early July. The live show has been called "captivating"... we'll have to see for ourselves in July.-
