After announcing the Ultrasonic Summer Tour in early April, Rooney
promised new music for the summer. Two months after the 37-date run was made official, the wait for new music finally ended…kind of. On June 8th, Rooney released a four minute track called "Second Chances." The song, which is to be featured on July 28th's El Cortez
EP, boasts an infectious piano hook and driving guitar track. The song follows a fairly standard pop structure, supported by the oft-repeated line "Hey, don't take it for granted, all your second chances." The song carries a light vibe and begs to be played poolside.
Interestingly, the song isn't technically new. "Second Chances" first
appeared on Schwartzman's debut solo record, Double Capricorn
, in 2011. There are few structural changes between the two tracks, however, the production quality of the El Cortez
version is undeniably improved. The song shows off the very same pop sensibilities that put Rooney on the map, making it a perfect song for summer.
