Last week, ?uestlove of The Roots and tUnE-yArDs, along with Anglique Kidjo and Akua Naru, covered afro-beat legend Fela Kuti's track "Lady." The rendition was done for Red Hot Organization's new Fela Kuti compilation, the same charity group that put out the terrific 2009 compilation Dark Was The Night. Today Okayafrica released a making-of documentary that features interviews from many of the musicians. Watch Questlove speak about the massive influence of Fela Kuti, and watch Merrill Garbus and Akua Naru speak about "reclaiming" an originally misogynistic song. The whole vibe in the studio comes off as very friendly and collaborative: the opening scene of a smiley ?uestlove and tUnE-yArDs gives me dreams of an amazing super-group with a wacky, crazily glyphed band name.
