Videogame (and music) producer Psychosis fused Neutral Milk Hotel's smooth American indie sound with some of the most popular radio rappers of today for Neutral Bling Hotel. It's an unpredictable combination and a calculable mashup (unpredictability being the most certain aspect). The album starts on a good foot: "King of Ante Up" combines two songs that blend into each other unexpectedly well. The introduction to the song starts with the crescendo of the beginning of a rap and then slowly, softly moves into the softer sounds of indie rock. The two compliment each other like chili pepper and chocolate. "Ante up! Get that fool/ante up! kidnap that fool!" plays over soft ahhhing notes. It's as weird as it sounds.

The second song, "King of Jesus Walks," is a mashup of Jeff Mangum's cries of "I love you, Jesus Christ" and Kanye West's "Jesus Walks." The song keeps the ryhthm with Kanye using Jeff Mangum as a (kind of) reverse rap break. The combination is markeably surprising in sound. The third song, "My 1st Airplane," gives some relief if, by this time, you're starting to miss soft indie mashups.

The album gives a creative interpretation of the usual mashup format. It's definetely three-dimensional (there are some interview clips, etc.). Psychosis collaborates artists with catchy sounds and presents a catchy album. Who knew Neutral Milk Hotel could sound like this? The album is full of the bling and G4s (and a little "dougie") promised in the title...but offers a little more (and, in most songs, the best of the artists merged). But not every mashup on the album works. Especially near the end of he album, the songs leave something to be desired (a reprieve?) and not all of the songs work well together. Some songs only give a taste of NMH, which, of course, is expected and appropriate for a mashup, but if you favor the smooth, ecclectic sounds of Neutral Milk Hotel, it might be best to approach the beat-heavy album moderately. Take frequent chai breaks and listen to "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" (original flavor).
