"Oh, you just gave me a desire, a burning," Heloise Letissier, better known as Christine and the Queens
laughs on Julie Adenuga's Beats 1 show as the host asks her to rap the lyrics to "Panda" by Desiigner
in French. She doesn't have any time to protest before Adenuga starts the song.
The song has been remixed by artists like Lil Kim
, Lupe Fiasco
, and Meek Mill
, and even Kanye
incorporated it into "Father Stretch my Hands Pt. 2" off of Life of Pablo
, but we've yet to hear anything in French. And for something so off-the-cuff, the humble Nantes-born singer gives an impressive, although quick, performance over Desiigner's song.
"I should do a cover in French, though," she says after the 15-second performance. Yes! How could you leave us hanging like that? It sounded like she'd been practicing the verse for months with the delicate French lyrics rapped flawlessly over the original.
Other than her fascination with hip-hop, Christine and the Queens also talks her debut Chaleur Humaine and her thoughts on a second album on the show. Listen to her impromptu performance above.
