Out and About: Crocodiles at Maxwell's

It's likely that the first thing you'll notice about Crocodiles is that they look the part of a frickin' awesome rock band. Don't let that fool you -- they really are a frickin' awesome rock band, in a day and age where most young musicians seem to be sipping iced tea as they mellow out with a soundtrack of lounge-chair electronica. Selling your animal print button downs, heavy eyeliner, blinged-out guitars image is only half the battle, and from first introductions -- a cacophony of haphazard electric guitar -- Crocodiles proves that they're not just a couple of pretty faces. They eschew the friendly, nice-to-meet-you handshakes for a crazed wake-up call, slap in the face. And the momentum doesn't stop.

Lead singer Brandon Welchez literally seems to move in fast motion, writhing to the music with a feverish intensity. When he jumped off stage to take an adrenaline-fueled stroll through the crowd, it didn't feel trite or embarrassing -- honestly, the dude could have made the Macarena look hip. He had a sleepy Wednesday night crowd dancing with all the reserve of frat boys on Cinco de Mayo. He shimmied up and down the mic with an effortless cool, spitting his war cry "I can't stand it!" The rest of the band matched him with an energy that you rarely see -- like someone had lit a flame underneath the stage and they had five final moments to seduce their audience before their drum set caught fire.

Not to project my own time/space continuum woes onto any innocent bystanders, but Crocodiles is truly a band for when you start getting depressed that your concert-going hey-day wasn't back in the string-snapping, guitar smashing days of the '70s. I hate fortune tellers, but I won't hesitate to predict that you'll be hearing more from these cheeky rockers. Check out one of their best tracks, "Neon Jesus" below, but be warned, studio recordings can't compare to the live show they cook up.
