After receiving some love in the general blog community, this pysch rock afro-pop act has our attention. Hailing from Kenya, they are like a legitamate, more authentic
Vampire Weekend, similar to the sound that all of
Graceland tried to capture (we think). Hopefully, the interest in this breed of musical styling isn't just a passing fad; we think
Extra Golden is a band to watch.
The band formed in 2004, and since then, has continued to advance the genre most of us know as "afro-pop," or "that style that those Columbia kids imitated to great success." Well, this may be the real deal. The music is sprinkled with the African drum grooves, the different-yet-instantly-recognizable guitar riff, and of course, the shuffle beat, but with some clear American rock influences. Add some pretty chilled out vocals, and you've got
Extra Golden. Although they hail from the other side of the Atlantic, these guys are poised for North American success, with past dates including
Bonnaroo (definitely a trendsetter), and future dates at American fests like
Pitchfork,
10,000 Lakes, and
Celebrate Brooklyn! and
Out of Doors right here in our own backyard (the latter is at
Lincoln Center. Not to mention a tour including many other US dates. Plenty of chances to catch the action. -
