Last week Jesse Elliott rolled through our NYC stomping grounds, bringing both his marvelous namesake and brilliant band These United States (Colin Kellogg - Bass, Robby Cosenza - Drums, Justin Craig - Guitars, Tom Hnatow - Multi-Instrumentalist) along for the ride. Having access to such a great band for an afternoon got us thinking...so much so that we decided to venture down the street to Washington Square Park ("one of the greatest monuments to human public interaction ever", per Mr. Elliott) to watch the band try their hand at street performing. Talent of this nature rarely goes unnoticed, of course. Without surprise, the band quickly drew a great response from the folks in the park. Best yet, we'll be bringing you the full video of their everything-but-the-kitchen sink style performance later this Thursday.
We realize, however, that this sort of setup definitely leaves you hanging in a way. That's why we're previewing the performance today, as well as providing this splendid interview with the entire band. In it, TUS discuss how the band came to be, a few details surrounding their latest release Crimes, as well as churn out one of the best shout out's we've ever had the privilege of witnessing. Quite the "Cosenza Experience" if you ask us.
After wrapping up their Baeble shoot, the band brought a shockingly fresh new sound (at least to our ears) to NYC's Bowery Ballroom a few hours later. And though they had flaunted the same lineup for a little while now, the show provided our first chance since the days of A Picture of the Three Of Us At The Gate to the Garden of Eden, to bear witness to TUS's full-band performance.
It was a bit of a revelation, to say the least. Their cherished, folksy past remains (our video can certainly attest to that). But propped under the Bowery's lights with guitarist Justin Craig's might slow hand on his instrument's precious neck, the band thickened their sweet Southern beauty, and ushered it just a bit closer to the almighty.
