Last Friday, the Baeble Music crew stormed NYCs
Webster Hall to capture an evening of sticky, sweet electro pop from the local ladies of
Au Revoir Simone, and absurdly catchy guitar pop from Austin TXs
Voxtrot, with our cameras. We also had the incredible opportunity to interview both bands for an upcoming episode of
The Green Room.
Those devout fans that were fortunate enough to arrive early on Friday were rewarded for their punctuality with a happy hour performance reminiscent of
Au Revoir Simones opening slot for
Peter, Bjorn, and John a few weeks earlier at Webster Hall.
Au Revoir Simoneobviously always looks good on stage (and on camera). But it is their capacity for swirling rich, therapeutic chords around the room that make this trio so easy to latch right on to while they perform. And, considering the energy we knew
Voxtrot was going to bring, it was a rather nice way to ease on into the evening.
For their biggest NYC show to date (though their recent add to the Siren Festival will certainly trump this show),
Voxtrot worked their way through a set that pulled songs from all three EPs, their recently released full-length album, and a new track that somehow managed to mash their personalized pop soundings with 80s hair metal. While songs like Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, and Wives, Kid Gloves, Steven, and Biggest Fan reached for the lofty heights (courtesy of a string quartet) they always seemed destined for, it was The Start of Something that stuck out in the bunch. I guess that is what happens when a gang of goofballs (ok,
Au Revoir Simone,
Favorite Sons, and others) rush the stage at once. We were definitely a little jealous we couldnt bounce around on stage with them. But we did get to freak out a little bit way up in the balconies. -
