Now Mixtapes Can Win Grammys

It's a good day for artists like Chance the Rapper because streaming-only releases, like mixtapes, can now be nominated for - and win - Grammys.

In May, a petition was going around demanding that free projects - i.e. mixtapes - be made eligible for Grammy nomination by The Recording Academy. "The eligibility guidelines have been revised to include recordings released via streaming platforms" announced by the Recording Academy yesterday (June 16th). These changes are effective immediately, meaning the new streaming-only releases are eligible for the 59th Grammy Awards.

The petition started because a man, Max Krasowitz, wanted rappers like Chance the Rapper to get the recognition they deserve. The new changes also mean that Chance's new mixtape, Coloring Book is fair game to win a Grammy. Well done, music community.
