has just released the music video for "Don't Think They Know (feat. Aaliyah)," the second single off of his fifth studio album, X
. Aside from featuring previously unreleased background vocals from a deceased musician, the bizarre music video feels like a thinly veiled attempt to execute some damage control over Brown's perpetual train-wreck of a career. The video opens with Brown and his entourage ominously driving through a poor neighborhood, while repeating the phrase "they don't know about us." The camera then cuts to Brown doing the exact same thing, except this time surrounded by many small children, which is in no way reassuring. Whoever directed this music video certainly tried, though: while the rudimentary color-pop makes the video feel like the lazy afterthought of some art student's graphic design project, the variety of colors shown slowly builds with the song, by means of symbolically portraying the life and spirit Brown injects into this community. Or so I hope.
