With almost no ties to
Shakespeare (other than the name, of course), this shoegaze lo-fi rock act will be part of the main stage evening benefit show at
Music Hall of Williamsburg. They hail from Glen Rock, New Jersey... but don't worry. The music is as fierce as the cycle of revenge depicted in the play bearing the same name... and probably more fun to listen to as well. Meet
Titus Andronicus.
All their album and song titles, and many lyrics, are all witty references to works of art or pop culture (kind of a claim to fame... see the song "Fall of Icarus" or the album title based on Seinfelds "Festivus"). Two albums in, and still relatively young, they are already capturing lots of attention around the New York independent scene. Now they are poised to share the main stage with buzz bands like
Health and
Pattern Is Movement.
The sound is kind of a homage to the music scene that has always dominated New Jersey kids, if that scene was suddenly stripped of it's core anger and dissonance, and turned into happy-go-lucky indie rock (with the same energy). The distortion, the shout refrains, the lo-fi, it's all there... but it's also dance-y and happy. There is a little
Neutral Milk Hotel in there too. But we've never heard a band proclaim "your life is over" so jubilantly. Well done, gentleman.-
