In the decade or so that they've existed, San Francisco band
Film School have always lurked just under the radar, opening for slightly bigger bands like
British Sea Power,
Silversun Pickups, and
The National, but never really garnering the kind of critical praise and blogosphere presence their cohorts have received.
Some would attribute it to their sound, often referred to as post-shoegaze (sidenote: for any who, like me, are tempted to ask "when did shoegaze ever end?", pop on over to wikipedia for a helpful
shoegaze timeline). Some say the band stays a little too true to their name, taking an overly methodical and dry approach to their music. Sometimes, that's just how the internet cookie crumbles however and some bands never get their proper due. Fortunately, after a tumultuous few years that saw them getting dropped from their label, getting all their equipment stolen, and more, the band is revved up and ready to let loose with their new album
Fission.
The first single from
Fission, "Heart Full of Pentagons", is a soaring, accomplished track that really showcases this new-found energy. Check it out below. Here's to hoping the blog gods shine a little light their way when
Fission comes out July 20th.
