In the world of music videos, there exist two schools of "beach" locations: the happy-go-lucky surfs up motif, and the sad, rainy, miserable motif. Guess which one is British? Today we will put the two side by side and see which one works better as an visual backdrop for music. It is also worth noting that while this seems like an easy task, we had a tough time coming up with more than ten videos (of popular notoriety) that took place entirely on a beach. If you have more entrants in the brawl, leave em in the comments!
WHO WILL REIGN SUPREME?
HAPPY BEACH: The Beach Boys, "Kokomo"
Our first entrant comes directly from the late 80s, and probably should have stayed there. The music video was spliced with clips from Cocktail, the "hit movie" the song was basically written for, about bartenders starring Tom Cruise as a bartender. Summery! Terrible!
Embeding disabled, probably due to embarassment.
SAD BEACH: Coldplay, "Yellow"
Sad Chris Martin is much better than Captain Crunch Chris Martain. But this sad beach definitely fits the misty tune it's supporting. It's a win! The only version with embedding enabled on the Tube has subtitles, so DEAL WITH IT.
HAPPY BEACH: Colby Caillet "Falling For You"
Poppy and sappy, this isn't a SUPER great case for the Happy Beach video... but it does have the hilarious, angelic face of SNL star Bobby Moynihan, which is good enough to melt my hipster heart.
SAD BEACH: Los Campesinos "The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future"
+20 for a great song, great video, introspective and emotional without being cheesy. Sad Beach leaps ahead pretty far with this one...
HAPPY BEACH: Sisqo "The Thong Song"
I spoke too soon. Happy Beach wins! Wow! Way to go!
FINAL TALLY: Sad Beach +31, Happy Beach +1,000,000,000. Stay happy, beaches!
